The Alpha and The Omega
February 25, 2008There are many gods, many powerful beings, many names, many religions but I believe in God. The God that created everything in seven days, the God in three divine persons, the God that gave us the commandment of love and the God that sent his only son to save mankind more than 2000 years ago.
“Let there be light!” These are the first words that were spoken by God in the first book of the Bible: the book of Genesis. Truly, God is the ultimate being. He knows everything, he knows everyone, he is everywhere, to put it in simple terms: he is AWESOME. But some people do not believe in a God. They don’t believe that there is an ultimate being that is responsible for life itself. It’s hard to blame them because there are no solid proofs that there is really a God. But despite of the lack of substantial evidences, I completely and strongly believe that there is a God.
The Bible is a collection of religious writings about God and his people. The Bible itself is a proof that God exists. Written in the Bible are age-old stories/experiences of people with God. Stories like the exodus of the Israelites form Egypt. God intervened many times to save his people from the hands of the Egyptians. God created a pillar of fire to protect the Israelites and he divided the red sea for the Israelites to cross the sea. Moses also saw God face to face when God gave his ten commandments to his people. Another story is Abraham’s. God tested Abraham’s faith by telling him to sacrifice his own son. God yelled from the heavens to stop Abraham from killing his own son. Another story is about the City of Jericho. This is where the Israelites marched around the walls of Jericho with their trumpets for seven days until the walls were completely destroyed just as God promised them. This does not offer any scientific explanations; this is truly the work of God.
God does not talk to his people the way he used to talk to them. He does not verbally speak to his people and he does not show himself. But it doesn’t mean that God is not real. God speaks to EVERYONE even the most ordinary person. My friend told me how God spoke to her. She heard a verse from a speaker during a conference. The verse was taken from Gal2:20 “No longer I but Christ.” When she heard this verse, she realized that she is not alone and that in everything, God has plans for her. Since hearing God speak to her through the the verse, it seemed like she was reborn or re-baptized. Her faith grew stronger and she started to fall in love with her service in YFC.
Another story proving God’s existence is my own. It was an awesome experience with YFC. It was called the Chapter Heads Overnight which was sort of a recollection for chapter heads. After attending the Chapter Heads Overnight, I felt like I was born again into the the YFC world. I was so inspired to serve, to love and be loved. For the first time in my life, I had a deeper understanding about God’s work in my life. My faith in God was at its highest point in my life. And with the existence of God, there is also the devil. Before the Chapter Heads Overnight, many obstacles stood in my way: my first ever college hell week and of course, laziness. In the end, I was able to overcome all of those obstacles (note: studying is not an obstacle).
I believe that God exists but I can not come up with solid proofs. There are no pictures, no recorded voice not even a physical description. But I firmly believe that God exists, that God loves us and watches over us. I believe that God is the source of life and everything. There are no proofs, it is all up to faith.
I don’t know about the curriculum here, but I hope that when you get to your theology and philosophy classes you get to find out about the metaphysics of God that deal with logical proofs of God’s existence.
For now, I’d like to think that the belief in God is anchored on, more than anything else, one’s personal experience of God. It sets apart atheists, agnostics, and real believers. It also makes understanding people who think you’re crazy easier.
Summary:
Basically, Noel’s answer to the question “what do you believe in even though you cannot prove it?” is that a God exists. This God is in the context of the Christian God who according the Bible created everything in seven days, exists in three divine persons, gave us the commandment of love and sent his only son to save mankind more than 2000 years ago. Although there are human beings who do not believe in the existence of this God, Noel clearly said that he completely and strongly believes that there is a God. His belief is supported by proofs from his own experiences or the experiences of other people. First, there are a lot of written accounts in the Bible that speak of their experience with God like Abraham and the Exodus experience. Second, Noel has a friend who experienced God speaking to her through a certain verse. Third, Noel himself experienced the presence of a God through his YFC Chapter Heads’ Overnight where he had a deeper understanding of God’s work in his life.

The essay was clear and easy to read.
The anecdotes used appeal to the readers.
Making some words ALL CAPS to put emphasis is a nice trick.

isn’t proving the existence of god by citing the BIBLE sort of, self defeating? The bible itself is a questionable source…
